This is the BBC news

Broad-bodied Chaser
'We interrupt this blog to bring you BBC news...'

OK, it's a Broad-bodied Chaser, a maturing male (the blue is coming through). The first dragonfly to visit the pond in 2009 was joined briefly by a Large Red Damselfly and Blue-tailed Damselfly, but they didn't wait for photos.

  1. If only this WAS the sort of story that made the news! Ever so slightly jealous of the pic, but enjoying your blog immensely. Many thanks, Graeme (ask JD if you need provenance!)

  3. Very well captured.

Is this a stick that you have erected in order to invite them to land?

  4. Yes, that was my plan exactly. It worked but maybe I should try something prettier next time? I put in a stem of cow parsley (umbellifer) but the dragonfly had already left.

If any dragonflies reading this could perch on a flower next time, I'd be very grateful. Thankyou!

  5. The sticks that I put out for the same purpose are usually thinner than that with (naturally) tapering ends. This according to my experience helps to limit the amount of stick in the shots and to bring out more of the dragonfly. Also I avoid whitish/paler sticks to limit exposure problems faced when using flash. So, the ones I select are usually brownish.
